BEGINNERS
Q&A

QUESTIONS.

If you're just starting out, here is some useful info. We are very happy to advise on kit, and we schedule Club runs suitable for beginners most weeks during the season.

Do I need to buy kit before I can run?

At beginner's Club runs we make the Club kit available. It includes a wide range of harnesses, bungee leads, belts, and more, available for you to try on for fit and use during Club runs. Once you identify the best kit for you and your dog, we recommend you explore online stores to make a purchase. If you don't feel ready to invest in new kit, there are Facebook groups that stock secondhand or nearly new kit.

What kind of shoes should I run in?

Canicross involves off-road running and is considered a winter sport, meaning rain, mud, and snow are all part of the fun. Traction is essential, especially since your dog will be ahead of you. Starting with trail shoes is recommended, as they provide flexibility across various terrains. Additionally, as a member, you will enjoy discounts at numerous shops that stock a diverse range of footwear.

I'm a slow runner, will I be left behind?

Definitely not! We invite runners of all abilities and offer group runs at varying paces, determined by the slowest runner. A run leader will frequently pause to check that all runners have caught up. Occasionally, a run leader may have an assistant who stays at the back to ensure no runner is left behind.

How fit do my dog and I need to be?

Ideally, you should be able to jog 4–5 km without much difficulty. Some routes may include hilly and muddy terrain, which adds to the challenge. However, everyone experiences fitness peaks and troughs, and we often stop regularly on runs to catch our breath (and many of us walk up the steepest hills!).

Can I canicross with a reactive dog?

Absolutely! Numerous reactive dogs and their owners participate in canicross without issues. To ensure the safety of your dog, fellow runners, their dogs, and the public, we recommend reaching out to the run leader in advance to inform them of your attendance and specify what triggers your dog's reactivity. They can offer guidance to ensure a positive experience all round, such as positioning you at the back of the group so your dog may feel less anxious.

Is it OK to run with my rescue dog?

Rescue dogs frequently have challenging pasts, often experiencing trauma. Running with them fosters trust and strengthens the bond between humans and dogs.

Can a junior run with me?

Juniors (U18s) can join a Club run. U14s must run with a parent or guardian during Club runs, and U12s need a secondary line attached to the dog for safety and an accompanying adult.

Can I bring a friend?

A family member or friend is welcome to join a Club run for up to three times, and then they will be invited to become a member.

I don't have a dog, can I still canicross?

Yes! Some of our members are 'borrowers' meaning they borrow a dog from family or friends, or are members of an online platform that connects dog owners with trusted people.
